Interesting story. It's gravely unfortunate that such extremism often tries to disseminate its ideas through art, as was the case here. However, I applaud Katharina for her humanitarian approach to this complex work, attempting to efface its racial under and overtones. JY

5/23/07-I had a really nice time at the d.c. Listening Lounge last night. I heard some radio plays and an audio postcard. I was also able to share a few of my sound files as well. Good time for sure. The next one is in June. CL
5/20/07-Verdi's LA TRAVIATA as performed by the Canadian Opera Company was fresh, innovative, contemporary, and completely unashamed of its own "sexual" identity, that is, the interpretation did not try to apologize for the explicit nature of the original libretto. A performance such as this would never have been allowed in the U.S., which is unfortunate. Look for a podcast detailing some of the wonderful, timeless music that makes this opera one of Verdi's most renowned and loved. JY

more jazz-this is a great disc- “David Izenzon and Charles Moffett joined Coleman in 1962 and the legendary Coleman trio was born. They rarely performed live, but on December 21, 1962, Ornette played at the Town Hall in N.Y., which he rented. He organized the commplete concert, hired groups, printed posters on the wall and more. The concert started with a string quartet, followed by the Coleman Trio. A blues group were on the same bill and Coleman joined them. The concert closed by his trio playing another three of his compositions. Blue Note label recorded the complete concert but never released it, because of legal problems. All material was given to Ornette, who gave some of it to ESP-Disk (ESP 1006). The concert was another highlight of his musical career, but it turned out to be a financial disaster. It became his last appearance on the scene for almost two years.” (liner notes by Hans Schreiber/Tom “Tornado” Klatt Coleman's Town Hall

2007 Japanese pressing of this collaboration between Ryuichi Sakamoto, formerly of Yellow Magic Orchestra and worldwide laptop guru Fennesz. The impact and importance of this recording is difficult to overstate. Christian Fennesz is far and away the standard- bearer of laptop music, his thawed sound of fractured guitar chords and warm noise melts hearts around the world. Ryuichi Sakamoto, meanwhile, a contributing force in Electronic music for almost three decades in Yellow Magic Orchestra and his vast solo oeuvre, takes his place on laptop next to Fennesz for this historic meeting. Anyone concerned with the future of sound, or interested in modern music composition, or anyone who simply enjoys sweet ambient music should welcome this brilliant music from brilliant talents... towards a more brilliant world

"I'm gonna sing mostly new songs tonight," Neil Young tells the rapt Massey Hall audience, "...I've written so many new ones that I can't think of anything else to do with them other than sing 'em." He steps to the mic unadorned, distant from CSNY's rippled harmonies or Crazy Horse's yowl, hypnotically nailing 17 tracks on this unreleased 1971 solo set. You hear him tower at vocal heights on the chorus for "Old Man" (then a debuted, brand-new song) and name-check Canada on "Journey to the Past" and North Ontario on "Helpless," much to the Toronto crowd's delight. The sound is impeccable, and the closeness to Young in this spare setting exhilarates--especially his vocal quavering in the high registers, his intricate guitar work, and an overall vibe that exceeds description. And the DVD: Here you catch Young in tightly framed, starkly-lit shots, flourishing in the early years of an unparalleled rock career. Not only that, you get commentary from 1997, a rare window on how Young thinks, how he speaks, his humor. --Andrew Bartlett ---------- One of the greatest singer-songwriters of the rock era. Solo. Acoustic. January 19, 1971. Live At Massey Hall, the legendary concert from Neil Young, is finally officially released, and in highresolution stereo, in this CD+DVD package (also as a solo CD). The acclaimed Toronto performance features classics "Old Man" and, in a suite, "A Man Needs A Maid" and "Heart Of Gold" (before they were recorded for Harvest) along with some of his most popular songs ("Cowgirl In The Sand," "Ohio") as well as the most obscure ("Bad Fog Of Loneliness"). Live At Massey Hall is a newly mined rock gem.

'Beguiling, filligrane electronic song-structures' seems a good (if not totally cack-mouthed) way of summing up the Aoki Takamasa & Tujiko Noriko sound. Delicate to the MAX, '28' is full of utterly charming, lilting electronica, augmented throughout by Noriko's delicate Japanese vocals; with a result that would fail to enrapture all but the most craggy hearted individuals. Takamasa and Noriko certainly know their onions; taking dreamy soundscapes and under wiring with a crisp formation of electronic buttresses that compliment each other like a Heston Blumenthal dish. Ranging from the 'Vespertine'-esque 'Vinyl Words' and poptastic styling of 'Alien', through to the juddering symphony of album closer 'Nolicom', this is a genuine treat which won't spoil your appetite. Lovely

Composition Description by Brian Wise As a miniaturist, Grieg was a master. In particular, some of his most characteristic work can be found in the ten volumes of Lyric Pieces for piano. These short, attractive gems reveal a strong national flavor, combining the mildly chromatic style of nineteenth-century salon pieces with elements of Norwegian folk music. They are also relatively easy to play, being tuneful and rather accessible in style. Such a winning combination delighted the public and publisher alike, and almost singlehandedly assured Grieg a comfortable old age. Book One, Op. 12 opens with a delicate "Arietta," a cantabile melody accompanied by rippling arpeggios divided between the two hands. Subsequent sections include a "Waltz," characterized by a recurring stacatto passage; "The Watchman's Song," an unpretentious theme presented in repeated two-bar cells, surrounding a faster, more propulsive middle section; a lilting "Fairy Dance"; a mazurka-like "Folk Tune"; a vigorous "Norwegian Melody," which contains a deep, drone pedal point; "Album Leaf;" and "National Song."

The Sea and Cake are back! Thrill Jockey is proud to release Everybody, the band's seventh album and first full-length release in over four years. The record, available nationwide on May 8, marks the latest, perhaps greatest, chapter in a career that has become a benchmark for indie artists everywhere. Everybody finds The Sea and Cake continuing to perfect their singular brand of dreamlike pop music that sounds delicately handcrafted, yet effortless all the same. Sheets of glowing guitar tones skip along propulsive percussion underscored by gentle, introspective bass lines, all adorned by breathlessly delivered lines of lyrical poetry. The Sea and Cake is Sam Prekop (guitar, vocals), Archer Prewitt (guitar), John McEntire (drums) and Erik Claridge (bass). Since the release of their self-titled debut in 1993, The Sea and Cake have worked with John McEntire in the studio. For the first time in their fourteen year career, they have enlisted the recording talents of Brian Paulson (Slint, Wilco).

Excellent synopsis and review of Shostakovich below! Thanks for the post! JY

06:59 PM
DIMITRY SHOSTAKOVICH THE EXECUTION OF STEPAN RAZIN, OCTOBER, FIVE FRAGMENTS The story of Cossack Stepan Razin, who, in the 17th century, led a bloody peasants' revolt against the Tsar, is perfect fodder for Shostakovich. This rarely performed cantata is an exciting, violent work. Composed in 1964, with Shostakovich free of Stalin's repression, it shows the composer at his most angry, bitter, and sorrowful. Razin's piercing eyes, shining out even more brightly from his severed head, terrified the Tsar; in the words of the cantata's narrator (from a poem by Yevtushenko) "without concealing its triumph/the head began to guffaw at the Tsar." Bass-baritone Charles Robert Austin sings both Razin and the narrator with force and great expression. Gerard Schwarz and his Seattle Symphony whip the score into a frenzy. The 13-minute tone poem "October" is another rarity, commemorating the October Revolution. It quotes from the 10th Symphony but is entirely original in conception: beginning moderately, it ends in a maniacal march. The final work is "Five Fragments," and it is just that: a series of bits, none longer than 4 minutes long, that are "practice runs" for the 4th Symphony. They are worth hearing: one features bassoon, clarinet, and oboe, another is sweet and tender, and the last, beginning with snare drum and violin, is nice and creepy. Highly recommended.

a great work-Recorded in Moscow, London and Suffolk, Words For The Dying is a monumental tribute to the genius of Dylan Thomas. Originally released in 1989 and produced by Brian Eno, the album combines the remarkable vocals of Cale and the volume of a full orchestra, set to John's score. Includes the Eno-Cale collaboration "The Soul of Carmen Miranda."

“Making music was like I drive and drive looking for a place where there is nobody. I would arrive there, wow cool, I get out of the car quickly. Then I happily dance, sing, doing a mini party alone. Doing a solo show alone in a big green field. There is a lake, the sun, a train, an airplane, the city, a forest, camera, second sight and everything in the field. etc. Anyway, it's nice when it's working well. I had forgotten this way of enjoying for a while. Last year, after some collaboration albums, I remembered I wanted to have this feeling again.” (Tujiko Noriko, November 24, 2006)

It's great to read a piece about this music, which is indeed overshadowed at times by larger, more "familiar" compositions. Dame Janet Baker has recorded many lieder cycles, all of which I highly recommend, though her Mahler and Schubert songs resonate most deeply for me. I am working on a podcast series about this very topic, having been inspired by my reaquaintance with Strauss and Schwartzkopf! (See 1/24/07 post below.)

German composer Richard Strauss is noted for his large-scale orchestral compositions, such as his "Alpine Symphony" and tone poems. In contrast to these "heavier" pieces are his vocal compositions, and in particular, his "Four Last Songs" (VIER LETZTE LIEDER). Though no less atmospheric than their symphonic counterparts, these songs, with orchestral accompaniment, evoke an intimacy often associated with Schubert lieder (this in my most humble opinion). The first three songs of the four in the series are based on texts penned by Herman Hesse, no less! In particular, my favorite of the four is "Beim Schlafengehen" (Going to Sleep), a piece I was first introduced to back in '91 at the Marian Anderson vocal competition held at the Unversity of Maryland. The recording I refer to here is one done by the famous German soprano Elizabeth Schwartzkopf, accompnied by George Szell conducting the Radio-Symphonie-Orchester, Berlin, back in 1966. The voice is ethereal, rising to a climax that paradoxically underscores the gentle serenity of Hesse's verse. Listening to this piece again after so many years makes me nostalgic not only for that particular evening during which I first heard this beautiful music, but also for the excitement it instilled for art as a whole. Schwartzkopf's voice makes you feel as if your soul is gently floating upon the waves of some lyrical sea, without fear, completely immersed in the perfect marriage between composer, conductor, orchestra, and of course, vocalist. The High Llamas are back, rolling out their sounds with soul and bounce hitherto unheard in their halcyon days. The acoustic flavor of Beet, Maize & Corn remains present here: a string quartet lays the harmonic bed of the material, joined there by a quartet of female vocalists. All of which lends the gospel truth to the Llamas traditional group profile of piano, bass & drums w/ vibes, organ & a bit of gut-string acoustic for good measure. After all the planning & arrangements, it's a happy record, as happy as we are today.

Further inspiration from GAMLET: listened to some vocal music, afterwards, by Hector Berlioz, pieces not heard in some time. After visually experiencing the tenderness of the Ophelia scenes I was compelled to listen to Berlioz's "La Mort d'Ophelie," sung by Anne-Sophie von Otter. Film and song beautifully convey the "lightness" of Ophelia's gentle soul, thereby magnifying the tragedy that befalls her. Brilliant music and cinema! JY

I felt quite a bit of nostalgia as I wandered through Tower records the last few weeks, still finding quite a bit of deals too-I blame the record industry (outrageous prices for cd's) and technology for the decline. The end of an era for sure, a huge part of my life really, even though I haven't really shopped for music in years. It was great just browsing like I used to, hours passed. I suspect there will be specialty shops that deal mainly with vinyl and cd's in the future, a place for the serious collectors, but for now the end seems depressing. A few years ago I was strolling down the street speaking with C
on how I felt BOC and Antonioni were similar in their use of space
... Today I discovered this http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8jRJ1ZZ1VqU
and realized someone had a similar idea.
The person who created this clip has a love for both mediums.
Sometimes different art forms cross pollinate and create new modes of thinking.
Years ago, my first exercise in editing and presenting a piece for a public was for a concert (the Brine).
JS and I sat for hours editing clips from films and our own video work to accompany our live show;
it was incredibly useful,
even though many of the clips were not ours.
Anyway this piece reminded me of that experience and new modes of thinking.
There are other fan based clips, but I prefer the one above and Antonioni is a genius CL

A great Stereolab show wednesday just a short tram ride down the road from my apartment. Is was not easy to miss Barcelona-Arsenal and i debated it for about a week. But once that first groove kicked in with layers of organic moog drones and Tim Gane's playful riff, I knew I could wait to see the magic of Ronaldinho and Henry some other day. JS

For me one of the all time greats as far as lyrics and melody-They have proven, over time, to be much better than their so called peers(REM,U2,Smiths, Morrissey). If you put on 16 Lovers Lane and a track from Oceans Apart there is no evidence of musical decline, only more brilliance. Lately I have been listening to the Botany sessions, which is a bootleg recording of acoustic material 1989, Haunted House, one of Grant's songs really stands out, along with There is no reason to cry from last years Oceans Apart.. His lyrics always had a tinge of sadness in them and when he explored the theme of loneliness, it was always done with beauty and depth. He was a great inspiration to me and countless others. Rest in Peace. CL

C, I believe you're right! Indeed, Ravel's Bolero is a masterpiece of understatement. Look for a podcast, or a few notes at the very least, on this beautiful piece, coming soon! JY

Listening to Silver Apples. Tracks from Contact, released in 1969. Really amazing percussion, loops, lyrics. It is low-fi and feels very under produced but is incredible. Been reading about them for years and am glad to finally listen. JS

Konono No.1 show in Prague tueday, April 25th. I can safely say my mind was blown. A freight train of rhythm. Massive, metallic yet intricate and melodic. Most of the band were very non-chalant (reminiscent of Kraftwerk) which somehow for me always adds to the intensity of the performance. JS
