                                   the ocatillo arts group presents

                                                                      the other america

For some time it’s been fashionable to dislike everything American.

But beyond the raucous and monotonous posturings of the politicians in power who have dominated our screens for the past three decades, there is another America.

The ocatillo arts group is pleased to present a programme of new films from this other America, films which are quiet, luminous, at times amusing.

We also look forward to welcoming a mystery guest poet, creator of the shortest poem in the English language, whose following is greater in the US than on this side of the Atlantic.

With the participation of

Nicole Kochmann, Joel Schlemowitz, Scott Nyerges, Mike Vernusky, Paul

Clipson, Jefre Cantu Ledesma, Chris Lynn, Robert Robertson, Roger Warren

Beebe, Mar Solis, Joan Manuel Serrat, Spike Hawkins, Craig Herndon, and

mystery guests

7pm Friday 28th November at the Calder Bookshop Theatre, opposite the National Youth Theatre, The Cut, London SE1

Tube: Waterloo.

Ticket: five pounds

Concessions: four pounds.

6/15/08-Recent films from the library, netflix, the internet, galleries:

Le Samourai-brilliant

Control-haunting film references near the end.

Come Drink with Me-Hong Kong action poetry

The Last Emperor criterion-the supplements are great- especially Postcards from China-video footage.

Pierrot Le Fou-the trailer alone is worth savoring.

Antonio Gaudi-another masterpiece. Amazing music from Takemitsu as well. CL

Just returned from a wonderful trip to Iceland. While there, we saw many natural wonders all around the country, and enjoyed the very cosmopolitan city of Reykjavik. One item in particular would, I think, be of interest to readers of this site. On our last day in Reykjavik, we visited the National Gallery of Iceland, and saw an outstanding exhibition entitled "Art Against Architecture". Here are a couple of links: http://listasafn.is/?expand=0-114&i=114&root=1 and http://www.artforum.com/picks/section=eu#picks20549 -- V

great stuff-How do we rate this guy as an intellectual-http://www.npr.org/blogs/incharacter/2008/02/cookie_monster_comes_to_npr.html

2/17/08-Guys-thanks for the comments-it seems being an anti-intellectual is as American as watching Football on Sunday. The book I  am reading by Hofstadter was written in the early sixties and it seems frighteningly more relevant now; it is a fascinating topic . CL

JY, I agree about that album cover. Since the advent of the "CD", album cover art has indeed almost become a lost art. This one is certainly an exception. The artist's use of lines is superb.
